80th anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian jews

Pictures taken on May 31st 2023 at the Garden of the Righteous of Milan, on the occasion of the event organized by Gariwo Foundation and the General Consulate of the Bulgarian Republic in Milan with the aim of celebrating the eightieth anniversary of the rescue of the Bulgarian jews

During the event - which was held thanks to the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Bulgarian Republic and the National Institute of Culture at the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Bulgarian Republic - there have been several speeches oriented to remember and tell the brave actions made by the Bulgarian people during the Holocaust. At first, there have been the institutional greetings of Ana Paskaleva, General Consul of the Bulgarian Republic in Milan, Roberto Jarach, President of the Holocaust Memorial of Milan Foundation, Raffaele Cattaneo, vice-secretary with delegation in International and European relations of the Lombardy Region and Daniele Nahum, Municipal Counselor. Thereafter, Gabriele Nissim, founder and President of the Gariwo Foundation, and the professor Rumyana Marinova-Christidi, Head of the Jewish studies department at the Faculty of History of the “San Clemente di Ocrida” University of Sofia, held their speeches, thus telling and remembering the strenuous actions made by the Bulgarian people, Jews’ rescuers.

The Honorary Consul of the Armenian Republic in Italy, Pietro Kuciukian, the President of the Municipality 8 of Milan, Giulia Pelucchi, the priest of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church of Milan, Vasil Vilev, and Bozhidar Bozhkilov - a bass-baritone student of the La Scala Theatre of Milan, who sung the Italian and the Bulgarian hymns during the commemoration - also attended the event.

After the speeches, a wreath of flowers was placed in front of the commemorative stone of Dimitar Peshev, a Bulgarian Righteous honored at the Garden of the Righteous of Milan.
