The Righteous in Sports

Dictatorships can use sports to convey racist messages regarding the superiority of a given race or nation and can become an instrument of ideological propaganda for totalitarian regimes. But sports can also express the moral richness of a democratic society that values equality within competitions and whose goal anchors to the ennoblement of individual or collective performance in a spirit of friendship.

As history has taught, sometimes sport can save the world because the behavior of Righteous athletes can positively influence democratic life in our societies.

For this reason, we have collected some stories of Righteous sportspeople during the Shoah, of athletes who fought against totalitarianism, and of women and men who have defended and promoted human rights, respect for others, and solidarity through sport.
