The relay race for Memory at the Garden of Milan

On May 9, 2023, at the Garden of the Righteous of Milan, Gariwo organized an educational event along with Libera, an Italian association which is deeply involved in the struggle against Mafia. Libera’s commitment is to preserve and spread the values of legality, justice and equality by teaching and assisting - along with other groups and associations, such as schools, unions, cooperatives and parishes - all of those people who might be experiencing Mafia’s issues.

Libera has a very strong presence on the Italian territory and its international auxiliary organization, Libera Internazionale network, has reached over 35 countries in Europe, Africa and Latin America with its activities and its strong commitment in standing up against Mafia and other criminal organizations.

Since Gariwo and Libera share the same ideas and values about legality, remembrance, memory and righteousness, they decided to organize a common educational path into several middle schools located in Milan, thus teaching the students about the message of the Righteous who struggled against Mafia.

The final step of the initiative consisted in a relay race organized at the Garden of the Righteous of Milan, on the symbolic date of the anniversary of the Italian victim of Mafia Peppino Impastato, who was killed in Cinisi, Sicily at the age of 30 on May 9, 1978.  All of the 170 students who had participated in the educational project were involved into the initiative.

After the speeches made by Marco Riva, President of the Olympic Committee of Lombardy, Rosario Pantaleo, Municipal councilor of Milan, Gabriele Nissim, President of Gariwo, Giovanna Epis, an Italian olympic and marathon national champion, and Giorgio Rondelli, a famous Italian track and field coach, the students were involved into a relay race through the trails of the Garden.

The students passed among them - during the race -  a baton made with the wood of a migrants' boat who had shipwrecked near the Italian coasts of Lampedusa, causing lots of victims: that symbolic baton was chosen in order to give to the initiative an even deeper educational purpose.

After the relay race, the students attended a moment of sharing at the amphitheater Ulianova Radice, expressing their happiness and emotion for having participated into a such deep educational initiative and therefore honoring the memory of Peppino Impastato and his mother Felicia Impastato, a recognized Righteous that was honored with a stone at the Garden of the Righteous of Milan because of her strong commitment against Mafia's crimes.
