Over the years, the Italian Republic has shown a humanist vocation in its international
relations. Our country has made the repudiation of war, violence, national contrasts,
and humiliation of human beings one of the main aims of its foreign policy. Our
diplomacy has variously committed to peacebuilding, dialogue, conciliation,
conflict prevention, and respect for human beings in this spirit.
Telling the stories of the Righteous diplomats who - during the Shoah and other
totalitarianism - risked their lives, careers, and safety to help those persecuted and the
opposers is crucial to transmitting positive examples to the nations and future
generations. Telling the stories of the Righteous is also essential to teach the value of responsibility and remember that, on many occasions, our country was
capable of defending the value of humanity, which is the foundation of good relations
between States, nations, and people of different cultures.
