To mark European Day of the Righteous in 2016, we chose as theme of the ceremony on Monte Stella hill in Milan - to be held on 8 March at 11 am - "The moral and civil resistance of women for their own dignity, as a universal value”.

On 7 March international conference “Achievements and defeats in the legislation relating to women's condition in the world, with remarks by Livia Pomodoro, former President of the Minors Tribunal of Milan, Elisabetta Rosaspina, correspondent of Corriere della Sera and Milena Santerini, Member of the Parliament, professor at Università Cattolica, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Alliance against intolerance and racism of the Council of Europe.

To be followed by the pieces of testimony of Flavia Agnes, lawyer, women's rights activist in India; Halima Bashir, doctor from Darfur in favour of women victims of violence; Vian Dakhil, Yazidi Member of the Iraqi Parliament; Cecilia De Vincenti, daughter to Azucena Villaflor - founder of Madres de Plaza de Mayo; Giovanni Impastato, son to Felicia Impastato and brother to Peppino.

The event is part in the three-day initiatives held by Gariwo on behalf of the Associazione per il Giardino dei Giusti di Milano - to which it belongs along with Milan City Hall and UCEI - and received the patronage of the Italian Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic.

Celebrations of European Day of the Righteous will open on 6 March at 3 pm with the inauguration at Fabbrica del Vapore of a graffiti dedicated to Khaled al-Asaad, Palmyra's "keeper" murdered by ISIS in August 2015. To be followed by a great concert of Maestro Gaetano Liguori in Palazzo Marino on 6 March at 6 pm, in the presence of the Righteous women (or their relatives) who will be honoured on 8 March at 11 am at the Garden of Monte Stella hill: Flavia Agnes, Halima Bashir, Vian Dakhil, Sonita Alizadeh, Afghan rapper against the practice of child brides; Azucena Villaflor and Felicia Impastato.
