Today, March 6, 2024, Narges Mohammadi is honoured with a plaque at the Milan Garden of the Righteous Worldwide. Narges is currently held in Evin prison, 'the black hole of the Islamic Republic' where the Ayatollahs' regime's most feared political prisoners are incarcerated. Despite the precarious health conditions in which she lies - with two coronary arteries sixty per cent occluded, which put her life in danger - Narges continues from prison her battle for freedom and women's rights in Iran.
We reproduce below the appeal she wrote ahead of the Day of the Righteous 2024 and sent to us directly from the maximum security prison in Evin. The message is read out during the ceremony by Iranian activist and journalist, as well as Narges' husband, Taghi Rahmani.
Narges Mohammadi's appeal to Italy on the occasion of the Day of the Righteous 2024: "Confront Gender Apartheid in Iran and Afghanistan".
Gender apartheid entails the intensification and deepening of discrimination and oppression against women, along with the empowerment of religious and authoritarian regimes. The “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, by enhancing women’s agency, awareness, and courage, led to a severe crackdown by the Iranian government against women.
It is an undeniable reality facing the world. The Taliban and the Islamic Republic regimes have systematically and purposefully orchestrated conditions of suppression, domination, tyranny, and discrimination against women, and their subjugation.
On one hand, the laws, practices, and behaviors of these regimes, driven by despotic intentions, obstruct legal, political, and social changes in favor of women. On the other hand, the problem of improving the status of women in both countries is entangled with the dire issues of poverty and economic hardship. Furthermore, at the operational level, major world powers turn a blind eye to the violation of women’s rights, prioritizing their own interests and benefits.
Gender apartheid in the Islamic Republic regime operates in a deceitful, deceptive, and misleading manner, further intensifying and perpetuating discrimination against women through the principles of religious governance. From the international community, human rights and feminist organizations, as well as advocates of democracy, freedom, and equality, I demand support for the criminalization of gender apartheid and the liberation of women in Iran and Afghanistan, who stand up defiantly.

Narges Mohammadi is an Iranian activist and former vice-president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC) headed by Shirin Ebadi. She has dedicated her entire life to the struggle for human rights in Iran, fighting against the oppression of the Iranian theocracy. She courageously opposed the death sentences ordered, even against minors, by the regime, denouncing the judicial officers responsible for torture. Since the 1990s she has been entering and leaving prisons. Her last arrest was on April 21, 2022, when she was sentenced to serve eight years in prison for alleged crimes against Iran's national security. On October 6, 2023, she received the Nobel Peace Prize 'for her struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and for promoting human rights and freedom for all'. Since March 6, 2024, a plaque has been dedicated to Narges Mohammadi at the Milan Garden of the Righteous Worldwide.

از یک سو قوانین، رویه‌ها و رفتار حکومت در پرتو اراده مستبدانه رژیم، مانع تغییرات حقوقی ـ سیاسی و اجتماعی به نفع زنان می‌شود و از سویی دیگر معضل بهبود وضعیت زنان در هر دو کشور به شکلی لاینحل با مشکل فقر و وضعیت هولناک اقتصادی و معیشتی با هم عجین شده‌است و از سوی دیگر در مرحله‌‌ی عمل، قدرت‌های بزرگ دنیا با چشم بستن بر نقض حقوق زنان، منافع و مصالح خودشان را مدنظر قرار می‌دهند.آپارتاید جنسیتی در رژیم جمهوری اسلامی به شکلی موذیانه، فریبکارانه و گمراه‌کننده عمل می‌کند و با توسل به اصول حکومت‌های دینی، فرودستی و تبعیض علیه زن را عمق می‌بخشد و تشدید می‌کند.
از مصلحان جهان، نهادهای بین‌المللی حقوق بشری و فمنیستی و طرفداران دموکراسی، آزادی و برابری تقاضا دارم برای جرم‌انگاری آپارتاید جنسیتی و رهایی زنانِ به‌پاخاسته ایران و افغانستان ما را یاری نمایند.
