On March 6, the European Day of the Righteous, the Warsaw Garden of the Righteous Foundation is announcing the names of people who will be honoured with the title of Righteous in 2024. They are are: Jacek Kuroń, Vivian Silver and Amer Abu Sabila, as well as brothers Andrzej and Klemens Szeptycki.

The honorees will be commemorated in the Warsaw Garden of the Righteous which this year marks the 10th anniversary of its establishment. It is the first in Poland and one of several dozen Gardens of the Righteous worldwide. So far, thirty-eight figures have been honored in it. The Righteous are chosen by the decision of the Garden Committee from among the submitted candidacies. This year’s honorees are:

Jacek Kuroń (1934-2004) - politician, one of the main leaders of the opposition movement in communist Poland, minister in governments of democratic Poland. He started out his social activities in the scouts, and in the 1960s became an opposition activist, for which he was imprisoned several times. He co-founded the Workers' Defense Committee (“KOR”) and was an advisor to the independent trade union NSZZ “Solidarność”. He fought for the rights of the vulnerable and always strived for reconciliation. The issue of Polish-Ukrainian relations was particularly close to him.

Vivian Silver (1949-2023) - Canadian-Israeli activist for women's rights and peace in the Middle East. Since 1990, while living in the Be'eri kibbutz near the Gaza, she worked for the rights of Gazans and Arab Bedouins of the Negev desert. She co-founded the Arab-Jewish Equality Center, was a member of B'Tselem, Israel's human rights organization, and founder of the Women Wage Peace. She was assassinated in a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.

Amer Abu Sabila (1998-2023) - Israeli Arab from Abu Talul, a construction worker who was killed trying to help a Jewish family fleeing Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. During the attack in Sderot, Sabila provided help to the family of Dolev Swissa, who had been murdered by Hamas. Sabila took Dolev's wife Odaya and two daughters to the police station, unaware that the building had been captured by terrorists. Both him and Odaya were shot dead by Hamas.

Andrzej Szeptycki (1865-1944) - Greek Catholic Bishop of Stanisławów, Metropolitan of Lviv and Halych and Klemens Szeptycki (1869-1951) - Greek Catholic clergyman, archimandrite of the Univ monastery. The Szeptycki brothers devoted their lives to advocating for the Ukrainian community in Eastern Galicia and countering the Polish-Ukrainian conflict at the beginning of the 20th cenury. During World War II, Andrzej, as a metropolitan of Lviv, was highly critical of Communist and National Socialist ideology, informing the Vatican of Soviet and German crimes. He spoke openly in defense of the Jews. Thanks to the help provided in the monasteries, and coordinated by Klemens, at least 150 Jews were saved.
