It is a nongovernmental organization documenting and popularizing Poland’s and Eastern Europe’s recent history, as well as strengthening democracy and tolerance. I was founded in 1982, still under the martial law imposed by the Communist regime, as an underground editing initiative linked to the dissident movement, and since 1987 to counter the regime’s manipulation of history it has developed its own archive, whose part devoted to Solidarnosc is recognized as world heritage by UNESCO. Since 1996 the Foundation carries out teaching and cultural events besides editorial and archival activities. Its document rescue and oral history teams are particularly important.
