Hiding, sheltering and borrowing identities

a meeting in Jerusalem

On 19-21 December 2010 Yad Vashem held a conference discussing the issue of rescue in the Holocaust. The goal of this conference was to cover new aspects of the phenomenon of the Righteous among the Nations, including the numerical data and the political arguments relevant to it.

A considerable effort was made to explore and redefine acquired knowledge about the Righteous. For example speakers presented new lectures of already known stories. Tales such as the rescue of the entire community of the Danish Jews or the available notions about Jewish self-help in Poland and elsewhere have been presented under a new light, the relations between Jews and local populations, the clergy and the different Countries' social structure were investigated in innovative ways.

Other topics include the moral mindset of rescuers, seeking to establish whether altruism is a comprehensive explanation of this complex historical page, and the fate of the saviours who faced punishment for their deeds. The abstracts of the speeches include original pictures of Jews and rescuers.
