Toni Capuozzo wins "Hrant Dink" Prize

for freedom of information

Tony Capuozzo is the winner of the third edition of the “Hrant Dink” Prize promoted by the Rome Armenian Community and the Pontifical Armenian College.

The purpose of the Prize is to “underline the vital importance of the freedom of information” and to commemorate the figure of the journalist killed on 19th January 2007 in Istanbul. Hrant Dink did his utmost, in the columns of the bilingual newspaper Agos which he ran, to foster reconciliation between the Turkish and Armenian peoples and strove for freedom of press. In 2004 he was jailed for breaching article 301 of the Turkish criminal code sanctioning the crime of “offense against Turkish identity”.

Despite his awareness of the fact that he was risking his life he never wanted to leave his Country: "If I left I would feel I left alone all those people fighting for democracy. It would be a betrayal and I will never do it".

Toni Capuozzo worked with Lotta Continua, Reporter, Panorama Mese and Epoca. He later covered mafia for the tv programme Mixer by Giovanni Minoli. Then he worked for some newspapers of the Mediaset publishing group (TG4, TG5, Studio Aperto). He is a war correspondent for the tv programme L’istruttoria.

Since 2001 he has edited and anchored Terra!, the weekly TG5 programme, with Sandro Provvisionato, and he has written the books Il giorno dopo la guerra, Adios and Occhiaie di riguardo.
