Burma leader praises Aung San Suu Kyi

is this the end of persecutions?

At the United Nations the President of Burma-Myanmar gen. U Thein Sein, who has been opening the country after decades of dictatorship, praised the opposition leader for her "pro-democracy efforts".

Aung San Suu Kyi spent over 20 years under arrest because of her pacific struggle in memory of her father, a general murdered in a coup, and to take Burma back to the rule of law and the status of a civil nation instead of a that of a pariah in the international community.

It is the first time that she receives such a public recognition. According to the New York Times U Thein Sein's UN speech "seem to confirm the growing confidence that the exit of Burma from decades of authoritarian rule cannot be reversed in the country, where many colleagues of the military are known for their ambivalence towards change".

The speech though comes after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the loosening of import bans from Burma. Sanctions have just been lifted and the country is still suffering from weakness and discontent. Therefore the general's move could be politically motivated.

Yet, some details seem to prove that Burma has really undertaken the path to democratization. For example the State tv has broadcast the full speech of U Thein Sein making it possible for all Burmese citizens to see with their eyes the public praise of Aung San Suu Kyi and the general admitted the problem of the "brain drain" hitting the country because of the "previous political systems".

Also, the fact that Aung San Suu Kyi receive the public praise from those who previously used the force to stifle all dissent is also the victory of a non-violent practice that slowly eroded the brutal methods of the regime. This could be a lesson for other struggles.
