The embassy of Sweden to Rome will dedicate a tree in its Garden to diplomat Harald Edelstam, on whom Gariwo has bestowed the title of “Righteous”. Edelstam during the 70' was active in Chile, he worked to help Cuban colleagues and political refugees to escape persecution following Pinochet's coup.


Far from “our sea”, but close to our heart

On the other side of the world, in an area between Myanmar and Bangladesh, with a frontier once again as a bridge between salvation and persecution, a little-known Muslim minority - the Rohingya - tries to survive privation and violence. In September, MOAS Italia has decided to engage in an area far from our "sea", because suffering and humanity have no boundaries and exceed any barrier or geographical distance.


The atrocities against Rohingya do not stop

At the moment there are about a million Rohingya in Myanmar and they are one of the most persecuted minority in the world. Moreover, from three and half a month, in the north of the Rakhine State they are subjected to a fierce military repression. 


Death should not be measured by numbers

The first legal definition in the domain of mass persecution dates back to 1915 and concerns the massacres of the Armenian populations perpetrated by the Turks, which were followed by the trials of the perpetrators before the Martial Court. In the Treaty of Sèvres in 1920 the Great Powers use the terms "crimes against civilization" and "crimes of lèse-humanity". In the aftermath of Second World War, face the Holocaust tragedy, the Military Tribunal of the Nurnberger Trials against Nazi officials started the proceeding by stating the crimes on which it was competent... On 9 December 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously approved the Convention for the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide, which is considered as the most heinous crime against Humanity.
