Jovan Divjak arrested in Vienna
on “politically biased” Serbian warrant

Jovan Divjak, a former General of the Bosnian Army and an exemplary figure in the war in the ex Jugoslavia, was arrested at the airport of Vienna last night at 9 based on an international warrant issued by Belgrade and concerning alleged events in 1992.

On Tuesday he headed over Vienna to Bologna to take part in a conference about education and the future of Bosnia. Worldwide known for his high moral stature, expressed in all aspects of his life starting from his commitment to rescue the persecuted, Divjak is active in many NGOs working for reconciliation after the bloody Nineties war.
At the beginning of the ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia, according to the prosecution he would have attacked a column of the Yugoslavian army causing many deaths.

There are reasons to suspect "political grouds" behind the indictment, leader of NGO Gariwo Sarajevo, Svetlana Broz, told us in a phone interview. This would also be suggested also by a precedent. In March 2010 British police arrested Ejup Ganic, another prominent figure in Bosnia, but then refused extraditing him to Serbia because of lack of evidence.

Gabriele Nissim, who held a long interview with the General in 2000 in Sarajevo, said he can't believe the absurd event and expressed his full solidarity to "a man of great courage and moral stature, who never drew back from making difficult choices in a torn Country and was always able to assume a personal responsibility, committed to dialogue between the ethnic groups and to create a better future for the youths".

More than 200 people connected via Facebook and held a demonstration for Divjak’s release in front of the Serbian Embassy in Vienna.
