Hersch Lauterpacht

british jurist, he fought to underline the urgency of protecting individuals within collective tragedies

Jurist born in Zolkev, today in Ukraine, from a Jewish family. In 1945 he conceived An International Bill of the Rights of Man, a pioneering text that inspired the United Nations Charter, in which the first explicit mention of “fundamental human rights” was made.
Lauterpacht had a key role in the Nuremberg trial, where he fought to underline the urgency of protecting individuals within collective tragedies and of judging personal responsibilities in the face of inhuman orders.
He will be honoured on March 3, 2023 at Milan Garden of the Righteous Worldwide.
