“Today in Israel looking like an Arab is enough to be in danger, but we will continue to practise peace"

Conversation with Piotr M.A. Cywiński

The director of Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum Piotr M.A. Cywiński told us about the responsibility he feels in running such an important place (“not sacred but of death”, as Wlodek Goldkorn defined it), where over a million men, women and children lost their lives. He mainly spoke of visits to Auschwitz as “the awakening of moral restlessness that has no meaning unless it is a ritual of passage”, through which the life of those who pass through that gate as ‘tourists’ cannot remain the same.

Rahel Saya is an Afghan activist and journalist who fled Afghanistan thanks to an international rescue operation. She criticized the Talibans especially for their behaviour regarding women and children rights and she suffered great risks for that. Since we know that the voice of a reporter is the voice of the people of the society, I wanted to be the voice of my people, especially the voice of Afghan women and children and tell the truth to everyone. Yes I took the risk, but because I loved my job and activities, I never gave up and I will never give up.

26 years since the genocide of Srebrenica

On July 11, 1995, General Mladic's troops entered the town of Srebrenica and killed 8372 Muslim men and boys, later throwing them into mass graves. Twenty-six years later, Ratko Mladic has been sentenced to life imprisonment, the Mothers of Srebrenica are still looking for the truth, and a journalist, Kim Willsher, wanted to remember a woman who became a symbol of all that evil, Ferida Osmanovic, known as "The Hanging Woman".
