Today, March 6, 2021, with pride we share the video of support for the Day of the Righteous by the President of the European Parliament David Sassoli.
On the proposal of Gariwo, in 2012, the European Parliament proclaimed March 6 "European Day of the Righteous" to commemorate those who have opposed with individual responsibility to crimes against humanity and totalitarianism. Since 2017, the Day of the Righteous of the humanity has become a civil solemnity in Italy and is celebrated with dozens of initiatives in the schools and Gardens of the Righteous throughout the country.
Mordecai Paldiel, for 23 years at the head of the Department of the Righteous of Yad Vashem (over 18,000 Righteous were recognized under his direction), a member of the Sousa Mendes Foundation and Professor of Holocaust Studies in the USA, sent a message to Gariwo on the occasion of the Day of the Righteous 2021.
The Association for the Garden of the Righteous in Milan (made up of the Municipality of Milan, Gariwo and UCEI) organizes the streaming ceremony for the delivery of the parchments dedicated to the eight new Righteous at the Virtual Garden of Milan Monte Stella on March 5 at 3 pm. The Virtual Garden is the space created in 2017 on Gariwo.net to receive reports and testimonies from citizens on forgotten or unknown figures worthy of being remembered.
A year has passed since the first lockdown and the beginning of the health crisis, which affected our health, habits, the way we are with others and live together. Even the celebrations, such as those of the Day of the Righteous of humanity, have changed radically. The Gardens can no longer host students and citizens as in the past, the real space has moved into the virtual, but despite this, the Day continues to be an important date for reflecting on the values of the Righteous and on the issues of the present time.
The Righteous remembered during the ceremony are: Francesco Quaianni, Emily Bayer, father Italo Laracca, Carlo Bianchi, father Andrey Sheptytskyy, the De Regibus family, Leonilde Simonazzi, Reinhold Chrystman, Carlo Tagliabue, Nella Molinari and Luigi Cortile, Franco Basaglia.
To honour the Righteous of the past without closing our eyes in front of the threats to human dignity that lurk in the present. This was president of Gariwo Gabriele Nissim’s exhortation during today’s ceremony at Milan’s Garden of the Righteous. The ceremony, which was meant to take place in March on the Day of the Righteous of the Humanity but was postponed due to the pandemic, has been dedicated to honouring the new Righteous of the Virtual Garden – an extension to the one of Monte Stella hill.
Rita Kuhn survived the deportation thanks to the bravery of the Women of Rosenstrasse, honoured since March 6, 2020 at the Garden of the Righteous in Milan for saving 2000 Jews with their bold protest on Berlin's Rosenstrasse.
The Day of the Righteous is enriched with many events dedicated to exemplary figures that will be honored at the Garden of Monte Stella on March 10th. Here is the list of all the initiatives that will animate the city of Milan starting from March 3!
