The new Righteous have been selected for Monte Stella Garden in Milan

they will be honoured on the Day of the Righteous in 2020

The Guarantors’ Committee of the Association for the Garden of the Righteous of Milan, including the Municipality, Gariwo and UCEI, ratified decisions, made by the Assembly on 16th October, on the theme of celebrations of the Day of the Righteous 2020 at Monte Stella Garden of the Righteous in Milan: “Global responsibility. The challenge of the Righteous to save the planet and the human kind”.
Righteous figures approved are:

Rosenstrasse women, who saved 2,000 Jews, their husbands, from persecution through a bold protest in Berlin’s Rosenstrasse. They gather for over a week, despite the threats made by Nazi authorities;

Piero Martinetti, founder of Milan School, was the only philosopher among university professors who refused to take the oath to the Fascist regime in 1931 and preferred to give up his professorship and his own freedom of conscience;

Wallace Broecker, an American geophysicist and climatologist, can be defined as the “pioneer” of climate change, as in 1975 he predicted the growth of global average temperature and led to debate about global warming in a moment when few were ready to listen;

Valerij Alekseevič Legasov, a chemist, mitigated damages caused by Chernobyl disaster. After the explosion, he insisted on evacuating Pripyat inhabitants and worked regardless of radiations he was exposed to. In Vienna he witnessed on the responsibilities of the incident, arousing the hostility of his Soviet colleagues;

Yusra Mardini, a Syrian swimmer, swam 5 km in the sea for three and a half hours in August 2015, pushing the dinghy that carried other refugees and her to the Greek coasts. At 2016 Rio Olympics, she paraded under the five rings flat, in the refugee team;

Hevrin Khalaf, a Kurdish activist, dedicated her life to women’s rights and to the fight for peaceful coexistence of Kurds, Christian-Syrians and Arabs. Party leader of the Future Syria Party, she was brutally killed in 2019 by Islamic militiamen, immediately after the Turkish invasion of Syrian Kurdistan.

These individuals are timeless examples of responsibility and courage. The alarm launched by Broecker, which we caught too late, and Hevrin Khalaf’s commitment to build a multi-identity and violence-free country urge us to pursue the paths of coexistence and respect for the environment”, said Gariwo President Gabriele Nissim. “This is why we are calling for global responsibility. Indifference, anti-Semitism and racism can only be countered through risky and nonconformist decisions, as taught by Piero Martinetti and Rosenstrasse women. We hope that this will also apply to sport and in particular to stadium ends that have increasingly become a hostage of racist and discriminatory cheer”.
“Tenacious women outside any ordinary definition, scientists who used their expertise for the benefit of others and a scholar who did not surrender to fascist blackmailing. The Garden of the Righteous will be enriched by individuals who are more contemporary than ever, women and men who fought their battles with courage and determination to achieve a world free from intolerance and anti-Semitism and aware of the importance of protecting the environment to ensure a future for new generations. They are the highest example of the importance of not giving in to standardization, especially when the world seems to be following the wrong direction”.
These are the words of the President of Milan City Council, Lamberto Bertolé. Giorgio Mortara, vice president of UCEI, has repeated this, “Righteous selected for 2020 are crucial because this decision reflects the new direction that the Association intends to follow by introducing the theme of the environment and climate change among fundamental issues citizens should reflect on, and I believe that this will increase the interest in the commitment to the Righteous and to memory”.
The Committee also approved candidates proposed to the Association for Monte Stella virtual Garden, the digital space hosted on Gariwo website that ideally expands the size of the real Garden. They are: Francesco Quaianni, Emily Bayer, Father Italo Laracca, Carlo Bianchi, Father Andrey Sheptytskyy, the De Regibus Family, Leonilde Simonazzi, Reinhold Chrystman, Carlo Tagliabue, Nella Molinari and Luigi Cortile, Franco Basaglia.

The Garden of the Righteous in Milan (Monte Stella)

against all occurrences of genocide

On January 24 2003, in an area of the Monte Stella hill park in Milan, we inaugurated the Garden of the Righteous worldwide, run by an association set up on purpose by the Milan City Hall together with the Union of the Italian Jewish Communities and the Gardens of the Righteous Worldwide Committee-Gariwo.
Over the years we have honoured exemplary figures of moral resistance from Rwanda, Latin America, Bosnia, the European countries torn by Nazi and Communist regimes, from Tunisia, Russia, and Iran.
