The ceremony on Montestella Hill

“The stories of the Righteous – i.e. of brave women and men, who have run huge personal risks to save human lives from the persecution at the hands of bloody regimes, oppressive apparatuses, totalitarian ideologies – are a living memory, and will keep on being lofty civil and human examples, which we all shall draw inspiration from. Passing on this memory to the younger generations is a work of the utmost importance, because, as we know, the seeds of hatred and discrimination are never defeated once and for all. Educational action, starting from school, is indispensable to build the future. ”

By these words, Italy's President Sergio Mattarella thanked Gabriele Nissim and Gariwo for the work that led to the establishment of the Day of the Righteous of the Humanity - on 6 March. It is precisely with this spirit that, also this year, Gariwo cooperated with the Milanese institutions, associations and schools to mark the Day of the Righteous with several different events.

6 March for the Righteous. The writing “6 marzo per i Giusti” lit up the Pirelli skyscraper int he night between 6 and 7 ;arch, reminding people of the recurrence, which has become civil feast in Italy following the Parliament's approval.

7 March, Regione Lombardia celebrates the Righteous. At the Belvedere of Palazzo Lombardia, Gariwo chairman Gabriele Nissim, Armenia's consulPietro Kuciukian and the deputy-president of UCEI Giorgio Mortara have opened the Milanese celebrations, with an event that saw the participation of the students of the theatre course of Liceo G.B. In the event organized by theAssociazione per il Giardino dei Giusti di Milano (composed by Gariwo, Comune di Milano and UCEI) with the support ofIstituto Confucio (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano) and the association Yazda, we honoured at the Garden of the Righteous of Milan four new exemplary figures - Ho Feng Shan, Hammo Shero, Costantino Baratta and Daphne Vloumidi – in the presence of Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala, the city authorities, the honoured Righteous or their representatives, and hundreds of students of the schools of every grade. Very moving were the pieces of testimony of Baratta and Vloumidi, as well as the words of Ho Manli, daughter to Ho Feng Shan, and Farida Abbas, young Yazidi girl who took flight from slavery under the ISIS and told about the new terrible genocide that is gripping the lands where Hammo Shero went to the rescue of the Armenians in 1915.

14 March, new Righteous in the Virtual Garden.
