Day of the Righteous 2021

the annual ceremony in Milan

March 5, 2021, 9.30 am
Garden of the Righteous Worldwide, Monte Stella - Milan
Honoured five new Righteous

In compliance with anti-Covid rules, the ceremony will be exclusively live streaming on YouTube in Italian and will see the participation of representatives of the Association for the Garden of the Righteous in Milan and of the new honoured Righteous

A year has passed since the first lockdown and the beginning of the health crisis, which affected our health, habits, the way we are with others and live together. Even the celebrations, such as those of the Day of the Righteous of humanity, have changed radically. The Gardens can no longer host students and citizens as in the past, the real space has moved into the virtual, but despite this, the Day continues to be an important date for reflecting on the values of the Righteous and on the issues of the present time.

From the beginning of the pandemic, it was evident that the virus has also exacerbated crises and already dramatic and delicate situations.
We have seen it in refugee camps, among the damned of the Earth, in the increase in social inequalities even among the most developed countries, in the fallout of the crisis on the gender issue, in the new authoritarianisms and totalitarianisms, in the weakening of democracies, rights and freedoms. At the same time, the Coronavirus made us reflect on the importance of knowledge and the right to it, in an essential link between democracy and information.
From the beginning, we told ourselves that the "world after Coronavirus" would not be the same. The previous status quo is no longer sustainable: economic models are not, which have caused much of the environmental damage and social inequalities that today put the planet at risk, nor nationalistic policies, which in many countries have proved to be totally unsuitable for facing universal challenges.

The Righteous, in this sense, teach that nothing is predestined, but that individual choices can change the direction of history. For humanity to be able to choose in the best way, great examples are needed to show us the way to go.

There are stories that, albeit from the past, are emblematic of the already open wounds and contradictions that the arrival of Covid has aggravated and brought to global attention. They are stories of defenders of life, rights and freedoms. This is why, in line with these considerations, the theme of this Day of the Righteous 2021 chosen by the Association for the Garden of the Righteous in Milan will be “For a new Humanity. The example of the Righteous in the world marked by Covid ".

At the Garden of Milan we will therefore place new plaques for Dag Hammarskjöld, the Secretary General of the United Nations Nobel Peace Prize winner who lost his life during a mission to solve the Congolese crisis and who made the defense of democracy and peace his aim as man and as a politician; Carlo Urbani, the Italian doctor, engaged in a battle for the spread of essential medicines, who first identified and classified SARS, communicated the seriousness of the situation to the government and the WHO, managing to convince them to adopt quarantine measures and save thousands of lives at the cost of one's own; Liu Xiaobo and Liu Xia, the Chinese Nobel Peace Prize Winner and his partner who have spent their life in establishing an authentic democracy in China and in favour of the right to express one's thoughts; Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the judge of the United States Supreme Court, the second woman in American history to hold that office and the first female member of the Jewish community to serve on the Court, who has been a staunch advocate of equality between men and women and has given a great contribution to the affirmation of women's rights in the USA.
