A tree in the Garden of the Righteous Worldwide and a room within the new Museum of Cultures (Mudec) will be dedicated to the Syrian archaeologist who on past 18 August lost his life to defend the archaeological heritage of Palmyra. Furthermore, on 18 November, three months after his death, the seat of Milan's City Hall, Palazzo Marino, will host a conference in his honour.

This was announced on 10 September by Culture Councilor Filippo Del Corno during the press conference presenting Mudec's activities.

“Milan – said Del Corno – pays a rightful tribute to a man who lost his life to the defence of one of the richest archaeological and cultural sites, heritage of the whole humanity. After devoting to the site of Palmyra his study, research and preservation efforts,  Khaled al-Asaad tried to defend its treasures from Isis. His tragic death shall not be forgotten and this is why we are naming after him a room inside the Museum of Cultures and a tree in the Garden of the Righteous, following the proposal of Association Gariwo”.

The Comitato per la Foresta dei Giusti-Gariwo onlus put forward to dedicate a tree to the Syrian archaeologist 'For defending, in Palmyra, the archaeological heritage, memory of human civilisation’.

"The trees of the Garden on Monte Stella hill are dedicated to the Righteous who rescued lives, but also defended dignity and the loftiest human values - says Gabriele Nissim, Gariwo chiaman. - Khaled al-Asaad sacrificed his life to save in Palmyra the signs of the passage of different cultures and civilisations. By this recognition we wish to reassess the values represented by this testimony against the threat of fanaticism."
