On May 31, 2021, the Garden of the Righteous was inaugurated in the "Giuseppe Viviani" primary school in Marina di Pisa, near Pisa in Tuscany. The first four trees of the Garden were olive trees dedicated to the memory of Irena Sendler, Ciril Kotnik, Julius Bauman, and Gino Bartali. The boys and the girls from the school chose these figures.
During the inauguration of the Garden, the children talked about the work they have done with teachers and about the Garden's meaning, specifying the reasons why they chose to honor these first four Righteous. On this occasion, many stones were placed in the Garden, all of which contained quotations. Some of these quotations are by Primo Levi and Anna Frank.
In the next few years, an expansion of the Garden is expected to host new trees dedicated to other Righteous and the creation of a thematic library open to all citizens.
