The totem dedicated to Malala Yousafzai

The totem dedicated to Malala Yousafzai

On the occasion of the European Day of the Righteous, the Garden was inaugurated, within the Erodoto Institute led by Susanna Capalbo, in Corigliano Calabro, on March 7. At the ceremony was placed a totem representing the Righteous, that year after year the students will choose.
The first totem - inspired by the totemic sculptures of the architect and designer Ettore Sottsas - is dedicated to Malala Yousafzai, the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, known for her commitment to civil rights and the right to education.

The work consists of a steel pin and glazed ceramic elements, worked with the technique of columbine. The aim was to evoke the shape of the folds of the veil worn by Islamic women: along the lines that define it were inserted decorative elements taken from original drawings of a veil worn by Malala and the transcription of her name in Arabic characters. On one side there is also a writing of her name in Latin characters.

The day at IC Erodoto was characterized by the inauguration of the Garden of the Righteous, entertained musically by the school orchestra and then concluded with an interesting debate that saw as protagonists the students of the Institute who discussed the topic with the guests coordinated by the director Susanna Capalbo. Also present were the extraordinary commissioner Domenico Bagnato, captain Cesare Calascibetta, commander of the Corigliano Carabinieri company, Giuseppe De Rosis, president of the association “Gli amici dell’arte", Filomena Berardi teacher and coordinator of the project for the Institute and the Corigliano 1 Scout Group.
