Being artists in China

among repression and compromise with the regime

Architect Ai Weiwei famous for designing the Shanghai stadium and the Sunflowers artpiece exhibited at the Tate Modern gallery in London, has been held since April, 3 for protesting against government's corruption and repression. His fame was thought to keep him safe from the abuse of the Chinese authorities, but he had already been heavily threatened in the past, for instance by the destruction of his studio.

On Change.org you can sign a petition for his release. The New York Times devotes him its weekly feature Room for debate where scholars, museum directors, journalists and other experts discuss about topical subjects. This week's topic is the artist's role in China.

Bob Dylan has just become the tatget of the New York Times editorialist Maureen Dowd, famous for mocking George W. Bush. The singer accepted to play in Beijing by taking his political songs off his repertoire.

Did the Chinese regime manage to irreparably hamper the artist's freedom?
