24 January 2018 – h. 9.30
Elfo Puccini Theatre, Milan

Annual meeting held by the Associazione del Giardino dei Giusti di Milano with teachers and pupils of the schools of every grade, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day with its heritage of Holocaust remembrance. Remembrance and study of the genocide cases in the Twentieth Century, the wounds of the present times, in a pathway focused on Gariwo's strong concept: the Memory of the Righteous.

This event shall provide an occasion for students to discover the value of memory and confront with evil earnestly, without stopping to mere indignation, remembering the Righteous' exemplary deeds.
From the tales of those, with little or big deeds, have been able to experience various forms of opposition against evil, resisting threats to their lives and freedom, the loftiest goods that the human being possesses, young people draw indications to tackles the facts, exert their own judgement on them and choose the consistent behaviours in their relationship with the other.

The event programme starts unfolding from the theme of welcoming, proposing the testimony of Roberto Jarach, deputy president of the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Milan, and journalist Stefano Pasta, of the Community of Sant'Egidio, who will tell about their experience of hospitality of refugees offered by Platform 21, and will dialogue with Gariwo President Gabriele Nissim.

This is to be followed by the remarks by Elisa Giunipero, professor of Contemporary History at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan, who will tell the story of the Shanghai Jews and in particular of Ho Feng Shan, the Chinese consul to Vienna who provided the Jews with forged passports to save them from deportation.

From the Holocaust we will move our attention to our present times, with the testimony by Emilio Barbarani, who acted in the Italian Embassy to Santiago of Chile in the Seventies. After Augusto Pinochet's coup, for some months our diplomatic seat became the refuge for hundreds of opponents who risked their lives. The man who tackled this difficult situation was Ambassador Barbarani, who organised the runaway abroad of nearly 750 people.

Always to underline the responsibility of acceptance, in the present and the past, testimony will be born as a conclusion also by Armenian consul and Gariwo cofounder Pietro Kuciukian, and journalist Simone Zoppellaro, who will focus on the genocide against the Yazidi community. In the same lands of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, today we are witnessing to an act of welcoming and acceptance by the very Armenia, which in 2014 opened its doors to the Yazidi refugees.
At the Garden of the Righteous of Milan, on 6 March 2018, we will remember among others Mr Hammo Shero, the Yadizi chief of Mount Sindjar who in 1915 saved thousands of Armenians hosting them on the mountain and fighting the Ottomans.

Testimony and dialogues will alternate with the readings by the students of the theatre course of High school "G.B. Grassi" of Saronno (VA).
