Death and rebirth

remembrance of Shoah in Israel

In 2006 the United Nations decided to dedicate a day in remembrance of the Holocaust. The chosen day was the date of the liberation of the concentration camp of Auschwitz. Since that, the world commemorates the tragedy of the Holocaust.

The importance of this day is the remembrance itself and the dissemination of the consciousnes to people who don’t have the awarenes and to young people who will have in their hands the fate of the world, so that such horrors don’t repeat anymore.

Year after year the survivors are less and less; less and less we can hear their stories, and so we can not forget that period.

In Israel there are three dates dedicated to the remembrance of the Holocaust: the 10 of the month of Tevet, the International Day of the Remembrance of the Holocaust and Yom Ha-Zikaron laShoa vela Gvura.

The 10 of the month of Tevet, day in which also occurs the beginning of the siege of Jerusalem in 588 a.C. that destroyed the city itslef and the first Temple, is dedicated not only to the victims of th Holocaust, but also to all the deads with unknown places of burial.

Yom HaZikaron laShoa velaGvura (Day of the Remembrance of the Holocaust and Heroism) celebrates not only the Holocaust and its victims, but also all the heroes who sacrified their lives to fight against Nazis. This day is after Easter, the Omer, moment of grif for the Jews. In Israel there is the Jewish calendar, based on the sun and the moon. So anniversaries change from Gregorian calendar.

This year the event of TubiShvat, called Celebration of Trees, for the Gregorian calendar is on 26 January, one day before the Remembrance Day. This anniversary celebrates the beginning of Spring; the trees here in Israel arise, the almond trees bloom. It is an happy ceremony celebrating the rebirth of the nature after the winter.

This year the rain was abundant, after years of drought. Fields are green. The flowers blossom: tulips, narcissus, iris, anemone and others, in all the colours of rainbow.

Thinking about these days I remind a painting I draw  years ago that I think gathers these anniversaries.
In the drawing is represented a tree. The log has the shape of a David star and represents the Jewih people. Nazis tried to destroy it, but they failed and from the tree believed died a new sprout arises. Jewish people raise again. The State of Israel is born.

In these days of remembrance, in Israel and in the world, we have to remember the Holocaust and its victims, and the fact that, despite of all, we rose again, we are alive and there are new sprout: our children, grandchild, grandnephews. The children of the survivors.
