Finding our way to Europe again

"Nationalism and populism are the worst enemies of Europe because they come to question its values and agreements. This is precisely why European values are the best weapon to defeat selfishness, intolerance and hate. A great responsibility is thus placed on schools for spreading these values by educating the younger people to democracy, tolerance, respect, brotherhood, and feelings of belonging as citizens of Europe and the world." The message of the Righteous

What is the meaning of the Gardens of the Righteous? Why are we building them? This is the question we all need to address in this meeting. I imagine them as a permanent critical conscience for our society.

Why the United States needs to commemorate the Righteous of the world

At some point the chain reaction of moral elevation resulting from the experiences of the Gardens might lead to the United States joining Europe in recognizing March 6th, the anniversary of Moshe Bejski‚Äôs death in 2007, as a day when people can celebrate all of the Righteous of the world, and help transform the current "European Day of the Righteous" into a "Worldwide Day of the Righteous".

Farewell to Ulia

Ulianova Radice, director of Gariwo, died in Milan on October 15 at the age of 64. Philosopher, founder of Gariwo together with Gabriele Nissim, Pietro Kuciukian and Anna Maria Samuelli, always committed to spreading the stories and values of the Righteous. We will say farewell to Ulia at the Garden of the Righteous in Milan on Friday October 19 at 10.30.

In Sofia, a tree in honour of Dimitar Peshev

The deputy president of the Bulgarian Parliament, in 1943, stopped the deportation of the 48,000 Jews of his country. The event, held at the New Bulgarian University, is the first step towards the creation of a Garden of the Righteous in the only Eastern European former German ally, where all Jews were saved.

1968, a libertarian and libertine movement

1968 can also be defined as the outcome of the libertine and libertarian movement. Libertine as the unconditional right to pleasure. Libertarian, as a claim of a right to command, at universities and in factories…

Remember the past in order to build a future

The International Committee of the Armenian Righteous. Memory is the Future was founded by Piero Kuciukian in order to commemorate those who went against the genocide of 1915. The title emphasises the function of the memory, which is not a nostalgic look back in history, but a a clear sense of the past to build a future without making old mistakes.
The memory has many solutions and presents conflicting results, either positive or negative depending on how it is treated. Reflections on the previous events help us to understand the present, which means to search for the coordinates that allow us to interpret new situations with awareness of the dangers or opportunities that are triggered by certain mechanisms such as cultural, social and individual. The experience of the genocides of the twentieth century, the phenomenon of totalitarianism, resulted in the devastating world war, the balance of power during the Cold War, provide very precise indications on the geopolitical hegemony and humanitarian frifts to be avoided, while the example of the Righteous, their varied efforts on behalf of the persecuted, the demand for freedom, independence of thought and the instance of the defense of human dignity, are to be taken to avoid the pitfalls of arrogance, denial of truth, the rejection of diversity, closing the other, unilateral decision.
