The amnesia of the memory

After two years of the outbreak of violence in Syria, the murders of Syrians still continue. The letter of Shady Hamadi, Syrian writer and activist, underlines the importance of memory of what happened, and what is still happening in the country.

Salonika, 70 years after

In 1943, 53,000 Jews of Salonika were deported and exterminated by the Nazis. The current economic crisis in Greece, which deepened the anti-German sentiment in the country and the rise of neo-Nazist party Golden Dawn, lead to the wide-spread Holocaust commemoration, in which more than 3,000 people took part.

Death and rebirth

In 2006 the United Nations dedicated a day in remembrance of the Holocaust on the date that the  Auschwitz  concentration camp was liberated. The  day commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust is important for remembrance and to spread awareness to those who are unaware and to young people who have the fate of the world in their hands.

We donot forget!

Artist Sabina Saad introduces us to the work of Menahem Lemberger, and an interesting feature of Israeli society: the fact that some youngsters have the tattooes of their grandfathers branded on their skin. At the time this was forced into the victims, now it is a matter of free personal choice.

CDEC meets Yad Vashem

The exact data of the Holocaust in Italy: 6.806 women, men and children deported, plus 322 murdered or suicidal on Italian soil, and 2,000 lager inmates coming from the island of Rhodes occupied by Italy. It is maybe the most complete European database about the inhabitants of a "missing world", who were people deserving to be remembered respectfully, against all Holocaust denial.

Remember the past in order to build a future

The International Committee of the Armenian Righteous. Memory is the Future was founded by Piero Kuciukian in order to commemorate those who went against the genocide of 1915. The title emphasises the function of the memory, which is not a nostalgic look back in history, but a a clear sense of the past to build a future without making old mistakes.
The memory has many solutions and presents conflicting results, either positive or negative depending on how it is treated. Reflections on the previous events help us to understand the present, which means to search for the coordinates that allow us to interpret new situations with awareness of the dangers or opportunities that are triggered by certain mechanisms such as cultural, social and individual. The experience of the genocides of the twentieth century, the phenomenon of totalitarianism, resulted in the devastating world war, the balance of power during the Cold War, provide very precise indications on the geopolitical hegemony and humanitarian frifts to be avoided, while the example of the Righteous, their varied efforts on behalf of the persecuted, the demand for freedom, independence of thought and the instance of the defense of human dignity, are to be taken to avoid the pitfalls of arrogance, denial of truth, the rejection of diversity, closing the other, unilateral decision.
