Education

The role of Gariwo: education for global responsibility

What is Gariwo's identity and which are its goals in the coming years? We discussed this topic in a stimulating meeting with our ambassadors and collaborators. To answer these questions we must first of all start from the history of Gariwo and its originality in the cultural debate.

Holocaust Education before Comparison

"Two-thirds of Millennials (66%) cannot identify what Auschwitz was.” While frequent references to terms from the Holocaust might help to inform younger generations that something called the Holocaust happened, knowledge of what the Holocaust was has evidently often failed to extend beyond the mere repetition of a few hollow words...

Victor Orban's dangerous ideas

In 1930s, in Prague, when Nazism started its tragic process in Europe, Milena Jesenska claimed that to have a dignified life, one had to look after men who wanted to take the world towards a bad direction. If you do not pay attention, sooner or later bad politics will enter your home and become an unpleasant guest at your table.

Competition notice "Adopt a Righteous 2018/19"

The competition notice "Adopt a Righteous 2018/19" - proposed by Gariwo for the Association for the Garden of the Righteous of Milan (Gariwo, Municipality of Milan and UCEI), this year in collaboration with MIUR (The Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research) -, saw the participation of 300 institutes from all over Italy with more than a thousand works (literary texts, videos, comic stories, photographs) inspired by the stories of the Righteous.

Reflections for 2019

Who is a Righteous person? He or she is the one who often acts in a void and takes up responsibility when the world around seems to be headed in the wrong direction. I thought of the reflections of Agnes Heller and Hannah Arendt after the Gariwo network meeting we held in Milan in the presence of the representatives of the hundred of Gardens of the Righteous that have been born in Italy, Europe and the world.

Racisms 2.0

Journalist Stefano Pasta currently holds a Research Grant at CREMIT (Research Center on Education for Media in Information and Technology), directed by Pier Cesare Rivoltella, and works with the Centro di ricerca sulle relazioni interculturali (Research Center on Intercultural Relations), run by Milena Santerini – both of the Catholic University of Sacred Heart of Milan. With him we have talked about his new book "Razzismi 2.0. Analisi socio-educativa dell’odio online", published by Morcelliana, Scholé. This is what he told us.

Education

the Wefor-based teaching for keeping memory

Spreading the knowledge of the Righteous among young people is one of the main objectives of Gariwo. The most effective vehicle is keeping a tight relationship with schools, through teachers ready to be engaged with current issues in the formation of civil and moral conscience of the younger generation ...  Individual and collective memory is a fundamental element in the education of young people and a powerful tool in the hands of educators: that is why we talk about the educational memory as a tool of the construction of an identity.
Gariwo has been developing with educators, teachers, academics, intellectuals and associations, both in Italy and abroad, exchanging experiences, information and data processing, to be available to all operators of the training, in the form of educational projects, reflections, relationships, theoretical references, bibliography and news from the world of education ...
To indicate the Righteous as landmarks of European consciousness, with the project WEFOR we created the virtual teaching of Gardens in Europe, where the trees are planted for the Righteous from different countries; the entire section is devoted  to schools, with the title YouFor, in which the materials for teachers, the contributions of classes, processed and student research, as well as an extensive collection of media analysis are collected.
