The celebration of the European Day of the Righteos in San Marino
The Secretary of the State for Foreign and Political Affairs, the
Secretary of the State for Education and Culture, and San Marino’s
commision for Unesco, on Thursday, April 18, at 9pm in the
assembly hall of the University (old Church Monastery of St. Clare) are
organizing a public initiative: genocide in Rwanda: the evil committed,
the good accomplished in order to remember the first European Day of
the Righteous that was established by the European Parliament on May
10th, 2012.
Their Excellencies the Captains Regent of the Republic of San Marino, SE
Antonella Mularoni and His Excellency Mr. Denis Amici,
will be present at the meeting which will start by greetings from the
Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Pasquale Valentini and
the Secretary of State for Education and Culture, Joseph Morganti.
Moderator of the evening will be Patrizia Di Luca, the President
of the commision of San Marino for Unesco.
The concept of Righteous, used for the first time by the Yad Vashem
Memorial to honor the courage of the non-Jews who risked their lives and
those of their families to save and help Jews, who were trying to
escape the Nazi persecution, has taken an universal value over the
years: today the Righteous are all individuals who, in any place and at
any time, during genocide and totalitarianism, have been able to fight
for the dignity of man, supporting the victims, defending the truth and
not accepting discriminatory laws.
The Republic of San Marino remembers this significant day with the
testimony of Pierantonio Costa, Honorary Consul for Italy in
Rwanda from 1988 to 2003 and author of numerous rescues during the 1994
genocide. Along with him will be present Pierantonio Costa Luciano
Scalettari - a journalist who told about the horrifying events, and
the actions of men who brought relief to the fiercely persecuted people
in his book The list of Console (ed. Pauline),
During the evening some of the Socie Soroptimist Club of San Marino will
illustrate the international cooperation project carried out together
with the artisan center of San Marco of Kigali The project began in 2007
and is still ongoing, has won the Best Practice Award presented at the
Meeting of the Federation of Soroptimist Europe / Africa, which was held
in 2010 in Belgium.
