“On 6 March in Milan, on the background of a beautiful landscape, a wondrous garden, all men and women of the Italian Coast Gard were awarded an extraordinary recognition for the silent, but unstoppable work of rescue of thousands human lives. They have always done so at sea, and in the recent years they have been confronted with an unprecedented exodus and they had to take into safety thousands migrants, on ships full with elders and families with drained children, coming from war torn nations ravaged by famine and physical wounds". This is what Marshall Roberto Mangione wrote to his commander after the ceremony at Monte Stella Hill on the occasion of European Day of the Righteous.

Mangione wanted to share with the staff of the Coast Guard the great emotion felt in being awarded, in the name of the men and women of the Coast Guard, with the dedication of a tree and a stone in the Garden of MIlan.

In the letter (attached in the Insight box) Marshall Mangione recalled the great emotional involvement of authorities, citizenship and above all students, which he called “the most gratifying joy for our daily work of serving the cause of rescue”.

The Further Insight box also contains the pictures and video of some of the rescue operations carried out by the Coast Guard, upon kind concession of the General Command of the Harborsmaster' Office.
