Poland mourns its Smolensk dead

members of Solidarnosc perished in the crash

The nation is devastated by the loss of many essential figures of the leading class and social dissidents who were protagonists of the Country's recent history.
The remembrance of the Polish past receives a serious wound from the death of these people including:

•Lech Kaczyński, the President of the Republic, was one of Solidarność' founding members and a prominent figure in the Round table.

•Anna Walentynowicz, the woman symbol of Solidarność: her firing from the Danzig wharf in 1980 caused a wave of strikes and the birth of the underground movement.

•Ryszard Kaczorowski, the last President of the Polish government-in-exile in London. The government remained in charge from the Nazi occupation of Poland in 1939 until the end of the Communist domination in 1990. Kaczorowski left his post in conjunction with the election of the first democratically chosen President since the end of World War II, Lech Wałȩsa.

•Maciej Płażyński, one of the historic members of the Polish Parliament, connected to the Catholic movement "Young Poland". He was first a deputy and then the President of the Parliament, he helped reconstruct Poland economically.

•Arkadiusz Rybicki has been one of the closest friends of Wałȩsa's. He was in charge with the Solidarność European Centre.

•Janusz Krupski, founder of the underground magazine Spotkania - an independent Catholic magazine. In 1983 he was abducted in Warsaw by the Secret Services which took him to a wood and spread him with acid, thus causing him major burns. He was appointed Minister without portfolio for the War Veterans and the persecuted by the Communist regime.
