Sacharov Prize 2008

awarded to Hu Jia

Sacharov Prize

Sacharov Prize

Since 1988, the European Parliament has awarded people or organizations committed to the fight against oppression, intolerance or injustice, who as such support the respect of human rights and democracy all over the world, with the Sacharov Prize. This year it was awarded to Hu Jia, the young blogger who has been fighting for civil rights with his wife Zeng Jinyan for many years, and who for these reasons has been sentenced to three years and a half of imprisonment. The prize giving ceremony was announced during the Asem summit in Beijing and the Chinese Foreign Minister Liu Jianchao commented: "We are very dissatisfied because this decision betrays lack of respect towards China. That man is in jail because he's a criminal".
