Tale of a Righteous: Tadeusz Gebethner

the Polish soccer player who rescued a Jewish family

The Gebethner family was well known in Poland. Gustaw Adolf Gebethner had founded one of the largest Polish publishing houses. His grandson Tadeusz Gebethner had other interests: he played as a midfielder and a defender. Gebethner played in more than 150 matches and became the first President of Polonia club, a team with both Jewish and Catholic players.

On 1 September 1939 Hitler invaded Poland. Tadeusz Gebethner joined the army as a volunteer and fought with the 102nd Regiment of Uhlans. After the Polish defeat his regiment was interned in Lithuania. Tadeusz escaped from the prisoner camp and went to Vilnius, where he found safe shelter in one of his firm's bookstores. He started his activity in the underground.

In the summer of 1942, after surviving the massacre in Skawina, near Krakow, Ludwika Abrahamer and her 12-year-old daughter, Alina, desperately seeked refuge. An old acquaintance, unable to offer the two refugees shelter, directed them to the home of Tadeusz Gebethner, who kept them in his house for two years. Later they were joined by Ludwika’s husband, Solomon Abrahamer.

Tadeusz Gebethner helped Solomon Abrahamer obtain a German ID card under a false identity and provided his guests with everything they needed, including a difficult eye surgery for Solomon.

One day, the Polish police, alerted by informers, arrested the Abrahamers, but Tadeusz had them released. In 1944, Gebethner arranged for the Abrahamers to move to Hungary, which was considered to be safer before Germany invaded that country. Later on they would reach Israel. It was reposrted that Tadeusz Gebethner died in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising.

He was awarded the title of Righteous among the nations by Yad Vashem on 21 October 1981.
