Anti-Semitism a concern in Budapest

World Jewish Congress gathered in Hungary

Growing anti-Semitism is a concern in Hungary, and also the international community is worried. As a result the recent World Jewish Congress was held in Budapest and not in Jerusalem, according to a decision made to counter anti-Semitic actions that have taken place in Hungary in the past few months.

The Congress has issued a resolution demanding the Hungarian government to acknowledge that extremist rightwing party Jobbik "is a major threat against democracy" in the country. Viktor Orbán's executive is also demanded to sign the London declaration on the fight against anti-Semitism.

The document also invites the other countries to criminalize the public denial of the Holocaust and, where the Constitution provides it, to consider abolishing neonazi parties. The goal of the resolution is to lead all countries to adopt a legislation to protect their most sensitive communities, such as the Roma and the Jews, from "violence threats, racist hatred and insults".

The phenomenon of anti-Semitism nonetheless does not concern Hungary only. The rise of Golden Dawn in Greece has led to an increase in racism also there. To counter that, the Greek Parliament promoted a specific policy against anti-Semitism and the other forms of racism spreading in the country.

The President of the Jewish communities of Greece, Mr. Saltiel, stated that this draft of legislation does not provide diplomatic immunity, and therefore could be enforced also with offenders who are members of the Parliament.

Based on this draft, every individual or group inciting violence or committing it against other individuals "because of their religious or racial origins or the colour of their skin or their sexual preferences" can be punished with a jail term from 3 months to 6 years and will be charged with a fine of 20,000 euros.
