The Pakistani leader Salman Taseer was shot dead by one of his very bodyguards in the capital Islamabad. He had recently been vocal at opposing the same blasphemy law by which Asia Bibi is risking her life.
The killer was immediately arrested and said he assassinated the politician exactly because he was against the measure. The Pakistani police is though investigating to uncover any possible people behind the murder.
Pakistan has recently been hit by a wave of fundamentalist attacks, including the assassination of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Now there are difficult political negotiations to try and guarantee a minimum stability to the Country. According to BBC analyst Ilyas Khan the murder could undermine these efforts.
