The Rwanda Genocide: the evil committed, the good accomplished

The celebration of the European Day of the Righteos in San Marino

The Secretary of the State for Foreign and Political Affairs, the Secretary of the State for Education and Culture, and  San Marino’s commision for Unesco, on Thursday, April 18, at 9pm in the assembly hall of the University (old Church Monastery of St. Clare) are organizing a public initiative: genocide in Rwanda: the evil committed, the good accomplished in order to remember the first European Day of the Righteous that was established by the European Parliament on May 10th, 2012.

Their Excellencies the Captains Regent of the Republic of San Marino, SE Antonella Mularoni and His Excellency Mr. Denis Amici, will be present at the meeting which will start by greetings from the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Pasquale Valentini and the Secretary of State for Education and Culture, Joseph Morganti. Moderator of the evening will be Patrizia Di Luca, the President of the commision of San Marino for Unesco.

The concept of Righteous, used for the first time by the Yad Vashem Memorial to honor the courage of the non-Jews who risked their lives and those of their families to save and help Jews, who were trying to escape the Nazi persecution, has taken an universal value over the years: today the Righteous are all individuals who, in any place and at any time, during genocide and totalitarianism, have been able to fight for the dignity of man, supporting the victims, defending the truth and not accepting discriminatory laws.

The Republic of San Marino remembers this significant day with the testimony of Pierantonio Costa, Honorary Consul for Italy in Rwanda from 1988 to 2003 and author of numerous rescues during the 1994 genocide. Along with him will be present Pierantonio Costa Luciano Scalettari - a journalist who told about the horrifying events, and the actions of men who brought relief to the fiercely persecuted people in his book The list of Console (ed. Pauline),

During the evening some of the Socie Soroptimist Club of San Marino will illustrate the international cooperation project carried out together with the artisan center of San Marco of Kigali The project began in 2007 and is still ongoing, has won the Best Practice Award presented at the Meeting of the Federation of Soroptimist Europe / Africa, which was held in 2010 in Belgium.
