We must dream like Arna Mer

Dacia Maraini tells about a bold woman

The author of Bagheria and The silent Duchess describes Arna Mer in the Corriere della Sera: "An Israeli married to a Palestinian, a woman who has defied prohibitions, hatred, bombs and reports for the whole of her life, emphasizing her Jewish origin and at the same time expressing friendship and solidarity towards the Palestinian people [...]. She first created a school, 'Care and learning', and then a stage called 'The freedom theatre’.

"Her school was often damaged. She herself was beaten up by the Israeli soldiers, like the time when, so recall the witnesses, she barred the entrance into the classroom with her own body to prevent the militaries from breaking in. Her theatre was reduced to a heap od debris and then rebuilt by her son Juliano. 'Arabs and Israelis donated building material, volunteers came from everywhere and in less than one month we created a 150 sqm room', says her son who is now a famous and respected actor in Israel. Defying curfews and fear, Arna invited teachers from Tel Aviv to talk about theatre and teach the secrets of photography. On her stage, children learnt to play instead of throwing stones".
