Farewell to Miep Gies

she saved Anne Frank's diary

Miep Gies, the woman who discovered Anne Frank's diary, passed away at 100.

In 1922 in Amsterdam Miep met with Anne's father, Otto Frank, who employed her in his firm of preparations for the production of jams, Opekta.
The woman become a family's close friend and together with her husband and some colleagues she helped hide the Franks and other Jews in a small flat above Opekta, which would become a museum.

On 4th August 1944 the occupiers were arrested and in the empty flat Miep Gies found the precious diary. She kept it in a bureau with the intention of giving it back to Anne as soon as she returned.

When she got to know that the young girl had died in the camp of Bergen-Belsen she gave the manuscripts to Anna's father, who published them in 1947. Miep Gies spent her life in recounting the tale of Anna and her diary, and became one of the most important witnesses of the Shoah.
