In this film, the main character Captain Gerd Wiesler is a part of the East German Secret Police. It is his job to investigate people who might be a threat to the state. He is instructed to spy on and shadow a famous East German playwright suspected of negative activity. However he does not find what he suspects. This is a film about anti-establishment in Germany and was a major success in the country.
