Genocide prevention

The prevention of genocides is on the agenda of international politics after the tragedies of the twentieth century in Europe and the opening of other fronts of persecution and extermination in the world. The milestone of this issue is the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide of 1948, strongly desired by the Polish Jewish jurist Raphael Lemkin.

The sensitivity of the States has grown with the new millennium, but it still remains very limited and too often powerless.

Over the years, thanks to the fundamental collaboration with historians Marcello Flores and Anna Foa, Gariwo has increasingly oriented itself towards this goal, focusing on knowledge of contexts as a central element for an effective prevention of genocides and mass atrocities.

This morning Milan Garden of the Righteous hosted Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide of the United Nations, with a view to the ceremony for the European Day of the Righteous on March 6. "After so many years of sharing ideas with Gariwo Foundation I can finally see this very important place in person," commented Nderitu - "Telling the stories of the Righteous and honouring them in the Gardens is one of the most powerful ways by which we can preserve the memory of past genocides and educate the world about the importance of prevention".

On Thursday 11th January, at the UN International Court of Justice in The Hague, hearings started on the case presented by South Africa, according to which the war in the Gaza Strip constitutes an act of genocide against the Palestinian people. Can one say that a genocidal act is taking place in Gaza? If not, how can one define what is happening? After Hamas attack last 7th October and the subsequent war waged by Israel, the use of the terms “genocide”, “war crimes”, “crimes against humanity”, “pogrom” has increased exponentially in the media and social networks. We asked Professor Marcello Flores, one of Italy’s leading experts in Genocide Studies, to give us his views on each of these terms and how they apply to the Middle Eastern context.

The opening ceremony will be held in Halabja on Tuesday, October 18

The Garden of the Righteous will born in Halabja, where Saddam Hussein’s genocide of the Kurds took place in 1988. On October 18, the inauguration will be held together with local institutions, the university and the network of Kurdish-Iraqi associations. The first Righteous honored will be Gino Bartali, Irena Sendler, Denis Mukwege, Raphael Lemkin, Moshe Bejski, Hammo Shero, Wangari Muta Maathai and Alganesh Fessaha. The Garden is at the heart of Green Halabja, an international project to combat the effects of climate change in the region.
