Teaching at the service of Memory

To spread the knowledge of the Righteous among the young is one of Gariwo main purposes. The most effective mean is the relation with schools, through teachers active in facing contemporary matters for civil and moral conscience development of new generations.

The figures of civil courage function, the edifying example of the ones who decided to assume a personal responsibility in front of human rights violation, is fundamental to involve students in a dense analysis of recent events and historical facts that preceded us. History interpretation and the universal problems raised by the relation between man with his counterparts and the world, demand humanistic disciplines support together with an attention to the themes of the scientific debate, connected to scientists’ believes, research leanings, discoveries application and the relation between mind, body and conscience.

The memory, both individual and collective, is a fundamental dowel in young formation and a powerful instrument in the educators’ hands: this is why we talk of didactic memory in the identity construction, able to compare with the negative aspects of human behavior and the critical elements of diversity - but also with its richness, the propellant value of humanity when discovered and accepted in its edifying implications, of solidarity and pacific cohabitation widening and building, at last, a society opened to the world enhancement.

Gariwo has developed, together with educators, teachers, academics, intellectuals and associations, both in Italy and abroad, an exchange of experiences, information and elaborations, available to every didactic operator in the form of didactic projects, reflections, relations, theoretical references, bibliographic information and news from the world of education.

In particular, in 2010 we realized the Wefor project, developed in many different countries (Italy, Poland, Bosnia, Armenia) and supported by the European Community, in order to create a wider awareness of the Righteous in different critical situations in history, in extreme conflict conditions of authoritarian and persecutory drifts.

The European Righteous took charge of other human beings, both in their homeland and wherever they acted in the world. They operated by putting to use the universal values of respect and reciprocity, collaboration and solidarity, learnt in the cultural contest of the European continent. With their action they opposed to the denaturation of such values, the ideological deceit, the dehumanization invoked in the name of fake myths at the base of fundamental rights denial.

The formation of a civil conscience in young people passes through the ethic consciousness of the inheritance these exemplary figures left us, what their teaching represents for each one of us, the hope they express in the building of the future.

We developed the Wefor project in order to recommend them as models: we created the didactics of the virtual Gardens of Europe, where trees are ideally planted for the Righteous of different countries; a section is entirely dedicated to schools (significantly entitled YouFor), in which educational material for teachers, classes contributions, students’ compositions and researches are gathered, as well as a vast collection of further research material.
